Dark Ritual

Dark Ritual was originally released in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, but the version from Mercadian Masques, released in 1999, stands as a notable reprint. As a cornerstone of the black color identity, the card provides a temporary burst of mana at a low cost, a design philosophy rooted in the high-risk, high-reward nature of black magic which sacrifices long-term stability for immediate, overwhelming power.

The artwork for this specific iteration was provided by Greg Staples, whose illustrative style brought a darker, more visceral aesthetic to the Mercadian Masques set. While the card's function remained unchanged from its inception, the visual update reflected the artistic shift of the late 1990s, aiming to emphasize the shadowy, ritualistic origins of the spell. It was received by players as an essential tool for competitive formats, solidifying its reputation as one of the most efficient spells in the game's history.
