Where it came from
The Primates front card is part of the Jumpstart 2022 release for Magic: The Gathering, a set designed to facilitate quick, randomized gameplay by combining two pre-constructed 20-card packs. Released in December 2022, the set utilized a front card in each pack to clearly identify the theme, such as Primates, providing players with an immediate visual cue for the pack's mechanics and tribal focus.
The design of the Primates theme leans into the playful yet tactical nature of Magic's simian-themed creatures, featuring artwork that highlights the expressive, often mischievous character designs central to the game's creature type. These thematic dividers were created to bridge the gap between casual accessibility and the deep lore of the multiverse, and they were generally well-received by the community for effectively streamlining the pick-up-and-play experience that defines the Jumpstart format.
