Where it came from
Scrying originated as a common enchantment in the early Magic: The Gathering expansion Visions, released in 1997. Designed as part of the game's exploration of blue magic's utility, the card reflects the aesthetic of the Mirage block, which drew heavy inspiration from African, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian cultures. Its original function was to allow players to manipulate their deck, a foundational mechanic that would eventually be codified into the keyword 'scry' years later.
The Jumpstart 2022 version, numbered 15, is a specialized front card designed to represent the specific theme of a deck. These cards are distinct for their unique anime-inspired artistic style, a departure from traditional Magic illustrations, which was curated to appeal to fans of contemporary animation aesthetics. The set was intended to make the game more accessible and visually varied for casual players, and this particular design was well-received for its clean, modern look compared to the original 1990s art.
