Where it came from
Professor Onyx, identified as card 083 in the Strixhaven: School of Mages set released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021, represents the planeswalker Liliana Vess in her undercover role at the Strixhaven University of Magic. The card was designed to reflect the character's narrative arc during the set's storyline, where she adopts the alias Professor Onyx to hide from her past while teaching Necromancy at the Witherbloom College.
The card was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her detailed character portraiture. Villeneuve’s design aimed to capture a shift in the character's traditional aesthetic, opting for a more scholarly and restrained appearance that contrasted with her usual dark, aggressive depictions. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its thematic integration into the set's academic setting and its balanced mechanics within the standard play environment.
