Where it came from
Professor Onyx, a planeswalker card representing the character Liliana Vess, was released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Strixhaven: School of Mages. The card was designed as part of the set's central narrative, which follows Liliana as she goes undercover as a professor at a magical university. The card mechanics were specifically crafted to emphasize her mastery over death and resource manipulation, fitting her long-standing role as a central antagonist and occasional ally in the game's expansive multiverse.
The illustrative work for this particular promotional version features unique art that deviates from the standard set release, emphasizing the character's mysterious and authoritative persona within the Strixhaven campus. This promo variant was distributed through various organized play and retail channels associated with the set's launch. It was well-received by players and collectors who favored the character's iconic aesthetic and the specific gameplay utility of her abilities within the Standard and Commander formats.
