Where it came from
Professor Onyx is a planeswalker card released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Strixhaven: School of Mages. The card depicts Liliana Vess, a central antagonist-turned-protagonist in the game's lore, who infiltrates the set's titular magical university under an alias to hide from the entities pursuing her. Her presence in the set serves as a narrative bridge between previous major story arcs and the academic setting of Strixhaven.
The card was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her detailed character portraits. The design aims to balance her established necromantic identity with her new role as a professor, utilizing a dark, academic color palette. Mechanically, the card was received as a versatile staple for black-aligned decks, praised for its ability to generate card advantage through the 'magecraft' mechanic, which rewards players for casting instant and sorcery spells.
