Provenance

Where it came from

Promise of Bunrei was originally printed in the 2004 set Champions of Kamigawa, designed as part of a cycle of enchantments that trigger upon the death of creatures. The card explores the Japanese mythological concept of bunrei, or the splintering of a deity's spirit into multiple manifestations, which mechanicially translates into the creation of four spirit tokens when a creature is put into a graveyard.

The Masters 25 version, released in 2018, features the original artwork by Christopher Moeller. Moeller, a longtime contributor to the game, utilized a distinct, painterly style that emphasizes the ethereal nature of the spirits. This reprint was included to celebrate the history of Magic: The Gathering, specifically highlighting cards that defined the unique mechanical and thematic identity of the Kamigawa block during its initial run.
