Where it came from
The Vesuvan Shapeshifter was originally introduced in the Time Spiral expansion as a clever mechanical callback to the classic Vesuvan Doppelganger from the Alpha set. By incorporating the morph mechanic, the card allows players to conceal their creature's identity, mirroring the flavor of a shapeshifter blending into a battlefield before revealing its true nature upon flipping face up.
This specific iteration, numbered 77 in the Masters 25 set, features evocative art by Greg Staples. Staples, a prolific contributor to the game, aimed to emphasize the fluidity and uncanny, shifting quality of the creature. Within the context of the Masters 25 set—a collection designed to celebrate the history of the game—the card was included to represent the evolution of cloning effects and the enduring popularity of deceptive gameplay strategies.
