Where it came from
Prophet of Distortion was released in early 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch set, the second expansion in the Battle for Zendikar block. The card reflects the set's central narrative theme, which focused on the Eldrazi titan Kozilek and the unsettling, reality-warping corruption he spread across the plane of Zendikar. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the 'devoid' keyword, which categorized colorless cards that required colored mana to cast, emphasizing the alien nature of the Eldrazi invasion.
The illustration was created by artist Daarken, known for a prolific history of work within the Magic: The Gathering universe. The visual direction sought to capture the distorted, geometric aesthetic associated with Kozilek’s brood, utilizing fractured perspectives and an eerie, translucent color palette to convey the creature's ability to manipulate the flow of mana and draw cards. Upon release, the card was received as a functional utility piece for limited formats and a flavorful addition to the set’s broader mechanical identity.
