Where it came from
Prophet of Kruphix was released in the 2013 Magic: The Gathering set Theros, a block heavily inspired by Greek mythology. Designed to represent the thematic focus of the set—which emphasized devotion to gods and divine enchantment—this card depicts an oracle capable of manipulating the flow of time and mana. It was conceived as a high-impact creature for green and blue decks, designed to provide a significant strategic advantage by allowing the player to cast spells on their opponents' turns.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Eric Deschamps, who captured the ethereal, otherworldly nature of the Therosian oracles. Upon its release, it became a staple in the Commander format, where its ability to untap lands and creatures provided immense utility. Its power level was eventually deemed problematic for competitive play, leading to its banning in the Commander format in 2016, a decision that cemented its reputation as one of the most controversial and iconic designs from the Theros block.
