Provenance

Where it came from

Abhorrent Overlord was introduced in the 2013 Magic: The Gathering set Theros, a block heavily inspired by Greek mythology and the structure of ancient epic poetry. As a rare creature, it fits into the set's central mechanic of devotion, which rewards players for committing their deck to a specific color—in this case, black—by rewarding them with a flight of Harpy tokens upon the creature's entry to the battlefield.

The card’s illustration was commissioned from artist Slawomir Maniak, who sought to capture the oppressive, infernal nature of the entity. Maniak's design focuses on the imposing silhouette of the demon, utilizing dark, saturated tones to emphasize its role as a harbinger of decay within the Theros pantheon. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its impact in limited formats, where its ability to generate multiple flying creatures often proved decisive in board control.
