Psionic Blast

Psionic Blast was originally released in the 1994 Alpha expansion as a staple of early blue deck design, representing the color pie's occasional reach into direct damage. When it was reprinted as part of the Timeshifted subset in the 2006 Time Spiral set, it was included to pay homage to the game's formative years. The Timeshifted series served as a nostalgic nod to Magic's history, featuring classic cards with their original art and the distinct, retro-inspired card frame that collectors associate with the game's inception.

The card was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic artists in the early history of the game. His design aimed to capture the visceral, high-risk nature of blue mana manifesting as raw, mental energy. Upon its inclusion in Time Spiral, the card was widely received by players as a polarizing but welcome piece of history, sparking discussions about the evolution of the color pie and the enduring appeal of the game's experimental aesthetic from the mid-nineties.
