Psionic Blast

Psionic Blast was released as part of the Limited Edition Beta set in 1993, representing the second core printing of Magic: The Gathering. Created by Richard Garfield, the card was designed to give the blue color philosophy—which traditionally favored control and manipulation—a rare direct-damage capability at the cost of the player's own life. This mechanic was a deliberate departure from blue's standard mechanical color pie, reflecting the experimental nature of the game’s earliest expansions.

The iconic illustration for the card was created by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and influential early contributors to the game. Rush utilized a vibrant, high-contrast style that captured the visceral, volatile nature of psychic energy. Upon its release, the card became a staple in tournament play due to its unique combination of versatility and power, cementing its status as an enduring piece of trading card history.
