Where it came from
Psychic Frog was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically to introduce high-complexity, powerful cards directly into the Modern format, bypassing the traditional Standard rotation. The card occupies a niche in the set's cycle of dual-colored creatures, drawing inspiration from classic utility creatures that reward players for managing their hand size and graveyard resources simultaneously.
The card was illustrated by Ryan Pancoast, who leaned into a surreal and biological aesthetic to depict the creature's namesake ability. By pairing a frog-like physiology with thematic elements of psychic energy, the design aims to convey the card's mechanical function of discarding cards to gain power and evasion. Upon release, it was quickly recognized by the player community as a potent threat in competitive formats due to its versatility as both a resource engine and a recursive offensive tool.
