Where it came from
Psychic Impetus was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set, a supplemental expansion for Magic: The Gathering designed specifically for the Commander multiplayer format. The card belongs to a cycle of 'Impetus' enchantments, which are mechanically intended to encourage aggression by goading an opponent's creatures, forcing them to attack players other than the caster. This design reflects the social and political nature of Commander games, where players often look for tools to manipulate the battlefield without directly committing resources to combat.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the high-fantasy aesthetic associated with the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting. The illustration depicts a shimmering, ethereal influence meant to evoke the mental manipulation associated with psychic magic. Within the game's community, the card is recognized as a staple for deck archetypes that focus on disruption and forced-combat strategies, fitting seamlessly into the strategic goals established by its predecessors in the Commander product line.
