Where it came from
Psychic Impetus was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 set, specifically within the Arcane Maelstrom deck. This card belongs to a cycle of 'Impetus' enchantments introduced during this release, designed to facilitate the 'goad' mechanic in multiplayer formats. By forcing opponents to attack players other than the controller, the card serves as a tactical tool to redirect aggression and influence the political landscape of a Commander game.
The artwork for Psychic Impetus was created by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator in the Magic: The Gathering community. Villeneuve’s design captures the essence of mental manipulation, utilizing swirling, ethereal motifs that reflect the card's function of imposing a psychic compulsion upon a creature. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency and its ability to provide blue-aligned decks with a distinct, proactive way to handle problematic threats on the battlefield.
