Where it came from
Psychic Impetus was released in 2021 as part of the Forgotten Realms Commander set, a collection designed to bridge the gap between Wizards of the Coast’s premier tabletop roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons, and its trading card game, Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a cycle of 'Impetus' enchantments, which focus on forcing opponents' creatures to attack while providing a mechanical buff to the creature being pressured, embodying the chaotic and often dangerous influence of psychic or magical manipulation within a campaign setting.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, whose artwork for this set leaned into the high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the Dungeons & Dragons brand. The design of the Impetus cycle, originally introduced in Commander 2020, was met with positive reception from the Commander community for its ability to encourage table interaction and political gameplay, effectively serving as both a defensive tool for the player and a disruptive force against opponents.
