Provenance

Where it came from

Punctuate was released in 2004 as part of the Unhinged set, a specialized expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game designed by Wizards of the Coast. Unlike standard sets, Unhinged was a 'silver-bordered' set intentionally crafted for casual play, featuring rule-breaking mechanics and self-referential humor that could not function within the rigorous constraints of official tournament play.

The card was illustrated by Adam Rex, a prominent artist who contributed several whimsical designs to the set. The card's design plays on the literal interpretation of punctuation marks, allowing players to manipulate the game state by adding or removing commas and periods from card text. It was received as a quintessential example of the set's avant-garde approach to game design, prioritizing comedic engagement over competitive stability.
