Pyreheart Wolf was originally introduced in the 2012 Magic: The Gathering expansion Dark Ascension. Set within the gothic horror world of Innistrad, the card reflects the set’s focus on the fragile survival of humanity against encroaching supernatural threats. The creature embodies the feral, fire-infused transformation brought about by the world's pervasive curses, serving as a tactical card designed to force opponents into difficult defensive situations by granting the menace keyword to other creatures.

The artwork for Pyreheart Wolf was illustrated by Nils Hamm, a frequent contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and painterly style. Hamm chose to emphasize the wolf's combustible nature, utilizing a vibrant palette of oranges and reds against a darkened, misty background to convey both the physical heat of the creature and the oppressive gloom of the setting.
