Rack and Ruin

Rack and Ruin was included in the sideboard of the 1999 World Championship deck belonging to Kai Budde, who piloted his Red-Green 'Wildfire' deck to victory that year. The World Championship Decks were a limited release from Wizards of the Coast intended to provide players with near-exact replicas of the decks used by the top competitors at the Magic: The Gathering World Championships, allowing the community to experience high-level tournament play from that era.

The card itself features illustration by Kaja Foglio, whose work is iconic to the aesthetic of early Magic: The Gathering. The design focuses on the chaotic destruction of artifacts, fitting the aggressive, disruptive nature of red-based strategies prevalent in the late nineties. While the original set printing of Urza's Legacy utilized standard card stock, these championship versions are easily identified by their distinct gold-bordered backs and facsimile signatures, which commemorate the specific deck construction that defined the 1999 competitive landscape.
