Provenance

Where it came from

Rackling was released in February 2000 as part of the Nemesis expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third set in the Urza's block, Nemesis continued the block's focus on complex mechanics and artifacts, functioning as a direct nod to the powerful Black Vise card from the game's earliest years. By forcing an opponent to discard based on the size of their hand, it served as a strategic tool for aggressive black decks designed to punish players for holding onto excess resources.

The card features artwork by the prolific fantasy illustrator Greg Staples. His contribution captures the grotesque, unsettling aesthetic often associated with the Phyrexian-aligned cards of the era. The design was received by players as a niche but effective sideboard card, prized for its ability to capitalize on opponents who favored card-drawing strategies, though its utility was ultimately constrained by its situational nature compared to more versatile staples of the time.
