Where it came from
Rancor was originally printed as a common enchantment in the Urza's Legacy set in 1999, designed by the Magic: The Gathering development team as a powerful tool for green aggressive decks. It quickly gained a reputation for its efficiency, as its ability to return to the owner's hand upon destruction effectively negated the card advantage usually lost when an enchanted creature is removed.
The artwork for the original Urza's Legacy printing was created by Kev Walker, whose gritty, visceral style helped define the look of the late 90s era of the game. When the card was reprinted in the 2010 Archenemy set as card number 67, it retained its iconic status, remaining a staple of green strategies due to the significant boost to power and trample it provides for a single mana.
