Provenance

Where it came from

Ransack was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Stronghold was the second set in the Rath Cycle, designed to flesh out the lore of the plane of Rath and introduce new mechanics such as the 'buyback' ability. It was created during a period of rapid expansion for the game, as the designers sought to balance complex strategic interactions with engaging new themes centered around the conflict between the Phyrexians and the rebellion on Rath.

The artwork for Ransack was produced by artist Jeff Miracola. His contribution fits within the dark, gritty aesthetic common to the Rath Cycle, depicting the chaotic and destructive nature of the card's effect. The card was received as a functional, if niche, utility card within the set, designed to provide players with a form of card filtering. While not among the most iconic cards of the era, it remains a distinct example of the era's focus on tactical resource management.
