Where it came from
Change of Heart was released in the 1998 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Stronghold. As a powerful sorcery card, it allowed players to gain control of an opponent's creature until the end of the turn, a mechanic reflecting the set's thematic focus on the shifting loyalties and betrayals within the narrative arc of the Rath cycle.
The card’s striking illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson. She utilized a high-contrast, dramatic style to capture the psychological manipulation suggested by the card's name, depicting a figure under the influence of an external force. Upon its release, the card became a staple of competitive play, remembered for its ability to swing the momentum of a game by turning an opponent's own resources against them.
