Where it came from
Parallax Tide was released in 2000 as part of the Nemesis expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set, the second in the Mercadian Masques block, focused on the theme of rebellion against the Phyrexian-influenced administration of the plane of Mercadia. Mechanically, the card belongs to a cycle of 'fading' enchantments designed by Wizards of the Coast to represent temporary, depleting magical effects that forced players to manage resources carefully before the card sacrificed itself.
The artwork for Parallax Tide was created by illustrator Randy Gallegos, who was a prolific contributor to the game during this era. His design utilizes a surreal, ethereal aesthetic that depicts the manipulation of land and water, fitting the card's function of exiling lands from the battlefield. Upon its release, the card was received as a nuanced tactical tool, eventually gaining significant notoriety in competitive formats for its ability to create powerful 'lock' states when combined with other permanent-clearing mechanics.
