Provenance

Where it came from

Ray of Command was first printed in the Mirage expansion in 1996, but this specific iteration was released in the 2011 Commander product. As part of the Devour for Power deck, this reprint was designed to support the multiplayer-focused format by allowing players to temporarily gain control of an opponent's creature and grant it haste, effectively turning a foe's strength against them during combat.

The artwork for the Commander 2011 printing was provided by artist Nils Hamm. His interpretation leans into the ethereal, fluid aesthetic characteristic of his work during this period, utilizing soft lighting and misty, magical silhouettes to emphasize the spell's nature as an act of mental coercion. It was well received by the player base for its utility in the growing Commander format, where the card remains a staple tactical tool for blue-aligned decks.
