Provenance

Where it came from

Reanimate first appeared in the Animate Dead cycle of the early Magic: The Gathering era, debuting in the 1997 Tempest set. It was designed as a high-risk, high-reward sorcery, allowing players to return a creature from a graveyard to play for a single black mana at the cost of life equal to the creature's mana value. Over time, it became a cornerstone of competitive play, defining the 'reanimator' archetype by enabling players to cheat massive threats onto the board early in a game.

The Jumpstart version, released in 2020, features artwork by Johann Bodin. Bodin sought to capture the visceral and macabre nature of necromancy, moving away from the more literal interpretations of the card's original art to focus on the ethereal, shifting energy of bringing the dead back to life. This specific printing was well-received by players for both its utility in the highly accessible Jumpstart format and for updating the visual identity of one of the game's most powerful historical spells.
