Provenance

Where it came from

Reanimate was originally released in the 1997 Tempest set, quickly establishing itself as a cornerstone of the graveyard-based strategy in Magic: The Gathering. Its design allows players to return a creature card from the graveyard to the battlefield for a relatively low cost, offset by life loss equal to the creature's mana cost. This efficiency made it a high-power utility card that defined numerous tournament-winning deck archetypes.

The 2004 Friday Night Magic promotional version features new artwork by Carl Critchlow, who utilized a gothic and visceral style consistent with the card's theme of necromancy. Released as a prize for participants in local weekly tournament play, this version is highly sought after by collectors for its unique frame treatment and the thematic consistency it brought to the competitive scene during that era.
