Where it came from
Reanimate first appeared in the Tempest expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1997, designed by Mark Rosewater as part of a cycle of powerful black sorceries. The card allows a player to return a creature card from any graveyard to the battlefield, a mechanic that defined the 'Reanimator' archetype in competitive play. The Ultimate Box Topper version, released in 2020 as part of the Ultimate Masters celebration, features alternate artwork by Lucas Graciano that emphasizes the macabre, visceral nature of the spell through a modern, painterly aesthetic.
The Ultimate Box Topper series was created to offer premium, oversized, and aesthetically distinct versions of iconic cards to celebrate the game's history. By commissioning new illustrations for these fan-favorite spells, Wizards of the Coast aimed to provide long-time collectors with a prestige version of staples that had remained tactically relevant for decades. The artwork by Graciano is highly regarded for its atmospheric lighting and dynamic composition, successfully updating the card's original gothic tone for a contemporary audience.
