Where it came from
Recover was originally printed in the 2000 Invasion expansion, designed as a functional black common card meant to bolster graveyard interaction and creature recursion strategies in Limited formats. The card allows a player to return a creature card from their graveyard to their hand while simultaneously gaining two life, providing a modest but steady resource advantage that defined the utility-focused design philosophy of the early Magic: The Gathering era.
For the Modern Masters 2017 reprint, the card was updated with new artwork by Igor Kieryluk. Kieryluk was commissioned to provide a fresh visual interpretation that maintained the morbid, cycle-of-life theme inherent to the black mana color identity. The set itself was curated to provide a balanced draft environment for the Modern format, and the inclusion of Recover served to maintain consistent mechanical support for graveyard-centric archetypes during the set's limited play experience.
