Where it came from
Advent of the Wurm was originally released as a rare card in the 2013 Dragon's Maze expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a powerful tool for Selesnya (green and white) decks, the card was intended to provide a significant instant-speed threat that challenged the traditional turn-based flow of gameplay. Its mechanics reflected the set's focus on guild-based synergies, emphasizing the brute force characteristic of the Wurm creature type within the game's lore.
The 2017 version, included in the Modern Masters 2017 set, features artwork by Greg Staples. Staples, a prolific illustrator for the game, opted for a dramatic, visceral depiction of the creature crashing through a forest environment to convey its immense scale and sudden arrival. This reprint was curated as part of a set designed to increase the availability of staples for the Modern format, and the card was well-received by players for its efficiency and impact in combat-oriented strategies.
