Where it came from
Recruitment Drive was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing inspiration from the storied Dungeons & Dragons setting, the card depicts a communal effort to rally forces in the city of Baldur's Gate. It is a white sorcery card designed for the multiplayer Commander format, reflecting the set’s mechanical emphasis on the 'initiative' mechanic and encouraging players to expand their presence on the board.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Games Workshop veteran and fantasy artist Kevin Chin. His approach centers on the high-fantasy aesthetic typical of the Forgotten Realms, utilizing dynamic composition to evoke the feeling of a growing adventuring party. Upon release, the set was noted for its success in blending tabletop roleplaying elements with card game mechanics, and Recruitment Drive was generally received as a utility card meant to bolster mid-game board states in casual play environments.
