Where it came from
Recruiter of the Guard was originally printed in the 2016 set Conspiracy: Take the Crown, designed to be a draft-focused multiplayer experience. The card was created as a powerful utility creature for white, allowing players to search their library for creatures with low toughness, which incentivized tactical deck building and toolbox-style gameplay. The mechanics proved highly effective in eternal formats like Legacy and Vintage, where the ability to tutor for specific silver bullets remains a staple of competitive white-based strategies.
The version from Modern Horizons 3 represents a modern reprint of this classic effect, updated with the set's aesthetic framing. Like its predecessor, this iteration retains the signature design, featuring artwork that highlights the character's role as a sentinel seeking out recruits. Its inclusion in Modern Horizons 3 was met with enthusiasm by players who prioritize functional utility in their decks, as it provides a consistent engine for finding defensive or synergistic creatures in a fast-paced environment.
