Where it came from
Reidane, God of the Worthy, and its flip-side Valkmira, Protector's Shield, originated in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Kaldheim, which drew heavily from Norse mythology. This card was released as a promotional variant, identifiable by its unique border treatment and collector number 21s, catering to players and collectors who favor the set's high-fantasy, icy aesthetic. The design captures the dual nature of the deity, reflecting the thematic emphasis on modal double-faced cards that defined this era of gameplay.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive and luminous style. In designing Reidane, Voss sought to embody both the judging aspect of a god and the protective duty of a shield-maiden, using a cool color palette that complements the set's overall frost-bitten theme. Upon its release, the card saw immediate play in competitive formats, particularly in control-oriented decks, and was well-received by the player base for its strategic versatility and cohesive artistic vision.
