What it does

Whenever a permanent an opponent controls is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on Sarulf.

At the beginning of your upkeep, if Sarulf has one or more +1/+1 counters on it, you may remove all of them. If you do, exile each other nonland permanent with mana value less than or equal to the number of counters removed this way.

Provenance

Where it came from

Sarulf, Realm Eater was released as part of the Kaldheim set in early 2021, drawing heavy thematic inspiration from Norse mythology and the concept of Ragnarök. As a legendary wolf representing the impending doom of the realm, the card was designed to embody a sense of inevitable destruction through its unique ability to exile nonland permanents whenever it receives damage. This particular promotional iteration features special alternate art, a staple of modern Magic: The Gathering card distribution designed to appeal to both players and collectors who value distinct aesthetics within a set's narrative arc.

The visual identity for this card was crafted by illustrator Yeong-Hao Han, who sought to capture the ferocious, world-consuming essence of the character. By focusing on a palette of dark, icy blues and ominous purples, the artwork emphasizes the frigid and apocalyptic setting of the Kaldheim plane. Upon release, the card gained significant traction in the Commander format, where its ability to reset the board state made it a popular choice for players favoring aggressive, control-oriented strategies centered on the Jund color identity.
