Where it came from
Reins of Power was first introduced to the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem in the 1999 expansion Portal Three Kingdoms. Designed to capture the strategic flavor of Chinese historical warfare, the card allows a player to temporarily exchange control of all creatures they own with those of an opponent, followed by an untap and haste effect. Its inclusion in the Commander 2015 set brought this powerful blue sorcery to a wider audience, solidifying its status as a staple for multiplayer formats where swinging the tide of a game with a single spell is highly valued.
The artwork featured in the Commander 2015 printing was illustrated by Deruchenko Alexander, who leaned into the dramatic and tactical implications of the card's effect. The composition emphasizes the shift in agency, visually representing the chaotic exchange of forces on the battlefield. Within the Commander community, the card is frequently cited for its utility as both a defensive stabilizer and a sudden offensive pivot, earning it a reputation as a classic high-impact utility card that rewards players who can time its usage during a critical combat step.
