Where it came from
The Relentless Dead was released as part of the Secret Lair 'Calling All Hydra Heads' drop series in 2022, an initiative by Wizards of the Coast that curated specific, artist-driven reprints for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Originally debuting in the 2016 Shadows over Innistrad expansion, the card was designed to support zombie-themed tribal strategies by allowing players to return creatures from the graveyard to the battlefield, reinforcing the cyclical, undead themes of the Innistrad plane.
This specific iteration features artwork by Greg Staples, who utilized the Secret Lair platform’s stylistic freedom to lean into a more visceral, gothic horror aesthetic. By focusing on the unrelenting nature of the creature's lore, Staples opted for a desaturated, decaying color palette that emphasizes the grim atmosphere of the setting. The release was well-received by players who favor the aristocrat and tribal archetypes, serving as a highly collectible piece for those invested in the narrative and visual evolution of the game's creature types.
