Eternal Witness

Eternal Witness first appeared in the 2004 Magic: The Gathering set Fifth Dawn, quickly becoming a staple in green-based decks due to its efficiency as a creature that retrieves cards from the graveyard. This specific iteration, released as part of the Secret Lair series, features unique, stylized artwork that distinguishes it from the original design by Terese Nielsen. The Secret Lair Drop series, introduced by Wizards of the Coast, focuses on premium, limited-availability releases that often experiment with non-traditional aesthetics and high-profile artistic collaborations to appeal to collectors and competitive players alike.

The art for this particular release was handled by artist Johannes Voss, who utilized a distinct, ethereal style to reimagine the character's role as a keeper of history and nature. By focusing on a dreamlike, flowing composition, Voss sought to evoke the card's mechanical function of recovering forgotten elements. Upon its release, this variant was well-received by the community for its evocative storytelling, marking a departure from the more grounded, traditional fantasy illustrations that characterized the card's earlier prints.
