What it does
First strike
At the beginning of each end step, if a card left your graveyard this turn, create a Treasure token. (It's an artifact with "tap, Sacrifice this token: Add one mana of any color.")
Students working in the field for the first time learn the benefits of small, agile spirit statues over large, strong ones.

Where it came from
Relic Retriever was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 series, specifically featured in the Prismari Performance deck for the Secrets of Strixhaven expansion. This set was designed to explore the magical university setting of Strixhaven, emphasizing the thematic duality of the school's five colleges. The card serves as a mechanical representation of the Lorehold college's focus on archaeology and the retrieval of historical artifacts, fitting the artifact-centric mechanics of the deck.
The artwork was created by illustrator Zezhou Chen, who captured the creature as a brass-constructed automaton engaged in the process of unearthing ancient relics. The design philosophy behind this card emphasizes synergy with artifact-based strategies, specifically allowing players to recur artifacts from the graveyard to the battlefield. Upon its release, it was noted by players as a functional utility piece for Commander decks that focus on graveyard interaction and artifact preservation.
