Where it came from
Oath of Scholars was first introduced in the 1998 Exodus expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a blue enchantment, the card was designed by the Wizards of the Coast team to provide a strategic resource mechanic that favored players with fewer cards in hand, reflecting the set's themes of experimentation and mechanical complexity.
The artwork was created by illustrator Randy Asplund, who provided a mystical, scholarly aesthetic consistent with the visual language of the Rath block. While the card was a niche inclusion during its initial release, its appearance in 'The List'—a curated selection of reprints—has allowed newer generations of players to rediscover its unique role in niche deck archetypes.
