Renewal

Renewal was released in 1995 as part of the Homelands expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set is widely noted in trading card history for its unique development cycle, as it was designed by a small internal team at Wizards of the Coast to emphasize flavor and thematic storytelling over the high-powered mechanics that characterized the game's earliest expansions. The set was inspired by the gothic-fantasy plane of Ulgrotha, a world defined by its insular cultures and lingering magical decay.

The artwork for this specific card was illustrated by Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists who helped define the visual identity of early Magic cards through a surreal and often dark aesthetic. In designing Renewal, the creative team sought to represent the cycle of growth and decay within Ulgrotha's blighted environment. While Homelands was initially met with mixed critical reception due to its perceived lower power level, the set has since gained a dedicated following among collectors who appreciate its distinct artistic contribution and the narrative depth of its world-building.
