Where it came from
The Serra Bestiary was released in 1995 as part of the Homelands expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to explore the lore of the plane of Ulgrotha, focusing on a dark, gothic aesthetic that departed from the high-fantasy themes typical of earlier sets. The card itself represents the religious and creature-based mythology surrounding the character of Serra, a central figure in the game's expansive narrative universe.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Anson Maddocks, who was a prolific contributor during the game's early years. His illustration style for this set was intended to evoke a sense of ancient, weathered documentation consistent with the internal theme of a 'bestiary'—a medieval book of beasts. Upon its release, the Homelands set was criticized for its low power level and perceived lack of impact on competitive gameplay, though it remains a notable piece of history for players interested in the game's early storytelling attempts.
