Where it came from
Reveka, Wizard Savant was released in 1995 as part of the Homelands expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed during a period when the game was rapidly expanding, Homelands was designed to explore the lore of the plane of Ulgrotha, a gothic, horror-inspired setting. The set was conceived as a standalone story-driven expansion, and Reveka was intended to represent one of the prominent spellcasters defending this shadowed realm.
The card was illustrated by Melissa A. Benson, a prominent artist during the game's early years. Her design for Reveka captures the somber and archaic aesthetic of the Homelands set, utilizing a traditional fantasy style that emphasizes the character's status as a learned academic of the arcane. While the card is often cited by players for its unique mechanics and limited power level, it remains a notable example of the early, experimental design philosophy of the mid-1990s.
