Healing Salve

Healing Salve was originally printed as a common card in the 1996 Magic: The Gathering expansion set, Mirage. Created during a period when Wizards of the Coast was shifting toward block-based design, the set drew heavily from African and Middle Eastern aesthetics and mythology. The card was designed as a low-cost, flexible utility spell, serving as a staple of early white-aligned decks for its ability to prevent damage or restore life in a single turn.

The artwork for this version was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prominent artist whose romantic, fluid style defined much of the game's early visual language. Hoover sought to evoke a sense of quiet grace and restoration, using soft lighting and a classical composition to depict the act of healing. While the card is often cited in discussions regarding power creep and the evolution of game balance, it remains a nostalgic touchstone for players who began their journey during the mid-nineties.
