Restless Prairie was released as part of the Art Series for the 2023 Magic: The Gathering expansion, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. These collectible cards were designed to highlight the high-fidelity artwork commissioned for the set, stripping away the traditional card frame and rules text to present the illustration in its entirety. The set explored themes of subterranean adventure and deep-earth exploration, shifting the focus of the game’s aesthetic toward vibrant, geological, and subterranean environments.

The piece was illustrated by Randy Gallegos, an artist long associated with the game's aesthetic landscape. In this depiction, Gallegos captures the expansive, windswept nature of the Ixalan plains, focusing on light and horizon to convey the scale of the world. By featuring his work in the Art Series format, Wizards of the Coast aimed to offer players a gallery-style appreciation of the world-building process, separating the artistic contribution from the mechanical utility of the playable game pieces.
