Where it came from
The Resurrection Orb was introduced to Magic: The Gathering in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set, a collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop. This set was designed to integrate the grimdark aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the mechanical framework of Commander, focusing on iconic artifacts and characters from the tabletop wargame. The orb specifically represents the Necron technology used to reanimate fallen metallic legions on the battlefield.
The artwork, illustrated by Games Workshop, captures the glowing, ethereal energy characteristic of the Necron race. As a colorless artifact card, it was crafted to provide recursion utility, allowing players to return creatures from their graveyard to the battlefield. It received a warm reception from both Magic and Warhammer enthusiasts for its thematic consistency, successfully translating a key piece of Necron lore into a functional game mechanic.
