Where it came from
The Resurrection Orb was released in 2022 as part of the Necron Dynasties deck in the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a unique collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, bringing the grimdark sci-fi aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the mechanics of a high-fantasy trading card game. The card represents a central piece of Necron wargear, designed to reflect the faction's ability to repair and reanimate their metallic warriors on the battlefield.
The card features artwork by the digital illustrator Campbell White, who leaned into the cold, clinical, and monolithic aesthetic defining the Necron race. The design process sought to translate the lore-heavy tabletop utility of the Resurrection Orb into a functional card mechanic that rewards players for recycling their board presence. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of both franchises for its thematic accuracy and its effectiveness in the Commander format, quickly becoming a staple in artifact-focused strategies.
