Retched Wretch

Retched Wretch was released as part of the Lorwyn block, specifically appearing in the 2007 set Lorwyn. This expansion introduced a pastoral yet surreal interpretation of folklore, drawing heavily on Celtic mythology and whimsical, sometimes sinister, fairy-tale aesthetics. The set was designed to explore the concept of day-night cycles and tribal synergies, with the card itself acting as a graveyard-hate utility creature that reflects the darker, more unsettling elements of the Lorwyn plane.

The artwork was provided by Raph Lomotan, who utilized a distinct style to capture the creature's wretched nature within the set’s high-fantasy art direction. Lomotan’s work here focuses on the grotesque physical manifestation of the creature, aligning with the block's emphasis on creature types like hags and elementals. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, if situational, uncommon that provided players with a repeatable method for thinning graveyards, a staple mechanic for black-aligned control decks of that era.
