Where it came from
Retriever Phoenix was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a promo card associated with the set's release, it represents the Lorehold College, one of the five magical universities depicted in the expansion. The card was designed to embody the college's thematic focus on archaeology and the summoning of past spirits, mechanically rewarding players for casting instant and sorcery spells from their graveyard.
The artwork for this specific promo version was created by illustrator Johannes Voss. Voss is known for his atmospheric and character-focused contributions to the game, and for this piece, he aimed to capture the fiery, spectral essence of the phoenix as it is reconstructed from ancient remnants. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its synergy in graveyard-centric decks and for the distinct, thematic visual identity it brought to the Lorehold faction.
