Where it came from
Retriever Phoenix was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set in 2021, a collection centered around a prestigious magical university in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. This particular card was designed as a promo variant, featuring the distinct 'Strixhaven Mystical Archive' aesthetic which highlights the set's theme of ancient, powerful spells housed within the university library.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, known for his dynamic fantasy compositions. Ejsing intended to capture the creature's fiery, avian nature through vibrant color palettes and kinetic energy, aligning with the red-mana identity of the Phoenix. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its thematic consistency and its role in graveyard-recursion gameplay strategies.
